Study: Reishi Water Extract Shows Antidepressant Effects in Animal Model

A 2013 study published in Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin tested a water-soluble extract from Reishi mushroom mycelium for antidepressant effects, using standard behavioral tests in rats to assess mood-related outcomes.

Study Design

Researchers administered a water-soluble extract from Reishi mycelium culture medium to rats and evaluated antidepressant-like effects using validated behavioral tests commonly used to screen for antidepressant activity. These tests measure behaviors associated with depression-like states in animals.

Key Findings

The Reishi extract showed antidepressant-like effects in the animal model. The effects were comparable to some pharmaceutical antidepressants in certain behavioral tests, suggesting the extract contains compounds that influence mood-related pathways.

The Water-Soluble Factor

This study specifically used water-soluble compounds from Reishi, indicating that polysaccharides (not just triterpenes) may contribute to mood effects. Most attention on Reishi’s adaptogenic properties focuses on alcohol-soluble triterpenes, but this research suggests water-soluble compounds also have relevant biological activity.

Beyond Sleep Support

While Reishi is commonly associated with sleep and relaxation, this study suggests potential mood-supporting properties that extend beyond just calming effects. The mushroom may influence multiple pathways relevant to emotional wellbeing.

Limitations to Consider

Animal studies don’t directly translate to humans. Behavioral tests in rats, while validated as screening tools, don’t capture the full complexity of human depression. This research doesn’t suggest Reishi replaces antidepressant medications—it indicates the mushroom has biological activity relevant to mood pathways.
