Study: Lion’s Mane Relieves Inflammatory Bowel Disease Symptoms
A 2017 study published in Oncotarget investigated how Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) extracts affect inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically examining immune system regulation and changes to gut bacteria composition.
Study Design
Researchers administered Lion’s Mane extracts to subjects with IBD and measured inflammation markers, immune cell activity, and changes in the gut microbiome over the study period.
Key Findings
Lion’s Mane extracts reduced inflammation markers and positively altered the gut microbiome in ways associated with reduced IBD symptoms. The mushroom appears to regulate immunity while simultaneously improving gut bacteria balance.
The Gut-Brain Connection
The gut-brain connection is increasingly recognized in research. Lion’s Mane appears to have benefits for gut health beyond just brain function, which may actually contribute to its cognitive and mood effects through the gut-brain axis. About 70% of the immune system resides in the gut.
Limitations to Consider
IBD encompasses several conditions (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) with different characteristics. Individual responses vary, and this research should complement, not replace, conventional medical treatment for IBD.
