Fruiting Body vs Mycelium: Which Mushroom Extract Is Actually Better?
Of all the fine print on a mushroom supplement label, the phrase that decides the most about product quality is also one of the easiest to miss: is this made from the fruiting body, or from mycelium? The two are genuinely different raw materials, they carry different compounds, and one of them is far cheaper to produce. Here is what the distinction actually means and how to spot which one is in the bottle.
The parts of the mushroom, briefly
The fruiting body is the mushroom you would recognize: the cap and stem of Reishi, the white spines of Lion’s Mane. It is the mature, above-ground structure. Mycelium is the root-like network the fungus grows first, underground or on a substrate, before it fruits.
Both are real parts of the organism. The problem is not mycelium itself. The problem is how mycelium is usually grown for supplements.
The grain problem
Commercial mycelium is typically grown on a bed of grain, usually rice or oats. When harvest time comes, the mycelium and the grain it grew through are dried and milled together, because separating the fine mycelial threads from the grain is difficult and expensive. The result is a powder that is part mycelium and part leftover starch.
This is where the label games begin. That leftover grain is rich in starch, and starch is a polysaccharide. So a mycelium-on-grain product can advertise a large “polysaccharides” number that comes substantially from the rice, not from the mushroom. The number looks impressive and means much less than it appears to.
Fruiting body material does not carry this baggage. It is the mushroom, harvested and extracted, so its measured compounds come from the mushroom.
What each one actually contains
For most of the compounds people take these mushrooms for, the fruiting body is the richer, more consistent source.
- Beta-glucans, the specific cell-wall fraction worth measuring, tend to be higher and more reliable in fruiting body extracts.
- For Reishi, triterpenes, the bitter compounds, are concentrated in the fruiting body. A mycelium product often shows little to none.
- For Lion’s Mane, the compound families of interest are associated more with the fruiting body than with grain-grown mycelium.
None of this means mycelium is worthless. It means that as sold today, most mycelium products are diluted by their growing medium, and the label rarely tells you by how much.
How to tell which one you are buying
Brands that use fruiting body tend to say so plainly, because it is a selling point. Silence is a signal. Watch for these tells:
- The label says “full spectrum” or “whole” but never says “fruiting body.” That phrasing frequently describes mycelium-on-grain.
- The only strength number given is a big “polysaccharides” percentage with no separate beta-glucan figure. Grain starch is padding that number.
- The supplement facts list something like “myceliated brown rice.” That is the grain, named directly.
- For Reishi, there is no triterpene content mentioned at all.
A brand using fruiting body will usually name it, report beta-glucan as a distinct number, and for Reishi mention triterpenes. That combination is the short version of the whole question.
The practical takeaway
If two products sit at similar prices and one is fruiting body while the other is mycelium on grain, you are usually paying similar money for meaningfully less mushroom in the second. The exception is when a brand is transparent about using pure, separated mycelium and backs it with real testing, which is rare and always disclosed.
So the honest answer to “which is better” is: fruiting body, in almost every real-world comparison you will encounter, not because mycelium is inherently inferior but because of how it is grown and sold.
