Beta-Glucan vs “Polysaccharides” on a Supplement Label
If you compare two mushroom extracts and one boasts “40 percent polysaccharides” while the other quietly lists “12 percent beta-glucan,” most people assume the first is the stronger product. Often it is the weaker one. This is the single most effective piece of label math in the mushroom supplement category, and once you see how it works you cannot unsee it.
Polysaccharides is a bucket, not a measurement of potency
Polysaccharide simply means a large chain of sugar molecules. That category is enormous. It includes the beta-glucans associated with the fungal cell wall, and it also includes ordinary starch, the same starch in rice and oats.
That breadth is the loophole. When a mushroom product is grown on grain, or when a lab runs a cheap gravimetric test that measures total polysaccharides, the leftover grain starch gets counted right alongside the mushroom compounds. The percentage goes up. The product does not get better.
So a large polysaccharide number, on its own, tells you how much total sugar-chain material is present. It does not tell you how much of it came from the mushroom rather than from its growing medium.
Beta-glucan is the narrower, harder-to-fake number
Beta-glucan is a specific type of polysaccharide tied to the fungal cell wall, and it is the fraction most of the interest in these mushrooms is built around. Crucially, measuring it properly requires a method that distinguishes true beta-glucan from alpha-glucan, which is what starch is.
Good labs use an enzymatic assay, often referenced as a Megazyme-style method, that subtracts the alpha-glucan starch and reports the beta-glucan on its own. That subtraction is exactly why grain filler cannot hide inside a real beta-glucan number the way it hides inside a polysaccharide number.
This is the reason a product can honestly show a lower beta-glucan figure than a competitor’s flashy polysaccharide figure and still be the better extract. You are comparing a clean measurement against a padded one.
The comparison rule
When you have two labels or two COAs in front of you:
- If both give a beta-glucan percentage measured by an enzymatic assay, compare those directly. That is a fair fight.
- If one gives beta-glucan and the other only gives “polysaccharides,” you cannot compare the headline numbers. Treat the polysaccharide-only product as unproven until it shows beta-glucan.
- If a product shows a high polysaccharide number and a much lower beta-glucan number side by side, the gap between them is a rough measure of how much non-beta-glucan material, often starch, is in the mix.
We do not publish a universal “minimum acceptable” beta-glucan percentage, because the right figure depends on the mushroom and the type of extract. What matters is that the number exists, is measured the right way, and is compared against the same number from another brand.
Why brands lean on the vague word
Reporting real beta-glucan costs more and, for a grain-heavy product, produces a smaller and less flattering number. Reporting total polysaccharides is cheaper and produces a bigger one. A brand that chooses the vaguer, larger number is making a choice, and it is usually the choice that flatters a thinner product.
None of this requires you to become a chemist. It requires one habit: when you see a big polysaccharide percentage, look for the beta-glucan number underneath it. If it is missing, that absence is the most honest thing on the label.
