What a “10:1 Extract” Actually Means on a Mushroom Label

Extract ratios are the most confidently displayed number in this category and one of the least informative. A bottle says 10:1, a competitor says 20:1, and the natural conclusion is that the second is twice as strong. It might be. It might also be half as strong. The ratio alone cannot tell you, and understanding why is one of the fastest upgrades you can make as a buyer.

What the ratio literally means

An extract ratio is a weight relationship between what went into the process and what came out of it. A 10:1 extract means 10 kilograms of raw starting material were processed down to 1 kilogram of finished extract powder. A 20:1 means 20 kilograms in, 1 kilogram out.

That is the entire claim. It describes concentration by mass, in one direction, at one step of manufacturing.

You will often see the ratio restated as a serving equivalence. A trial we reviewed recently used 3 grams of a 10:1 Lion’s Mane fruiting body extract and described it as roughly equivalent to 30 grams of fresh fruiting body. That is not an additional fact. It is the same ratio expressed as a sentence, and brands use the phrasing because “equivalent to 30 grams of mushroom” sounds more substantial than “3 grams of extract.”

The three things it does not tell you

It does not tell you what went in. This is the big one. The ratio describes the reduction, not the raw material. Ten kilograms of Reishi fruiting body and ten kilograms of mycelium grown on rice are both “ten kilograms of starting material.” If the input is largely grain, a high ratio concentrates largely grain. A 20:1 made from a weak, filler-heavy input can easily contain less of what you want than an 8:1 made from clean fruiting body.

It does not tell you what was concentrated. Extraction is selective. Hot water pulls water-soluble compounds including beta-glucans. Alcohol pulls fat-associated compounds including Reishi’s triterpenes. A ratio applies to total mass reduction, so it tells you nothing about which compound families survived the process. Two 10:1 extracts made by different methods can have genuinely different contents.

It does not tell you the number is true. No standard requires a brand to demonstrate its ratio, and no routine certificate of analysis line item verifies it. Beta-glucan content can be measured in a lab. A manufacturing ratio is a claim about a process that happened somewhere upstream, and it is accepted on trust.

Input claims versus output measurements

The useful distinction is this. An extract ratio is an input claim. It describes what a manufacturer says they started with. A beta-glucan percentage from an enzymatic assay is an output measurement. It describes what is verifiably in the powder you are buying.

When those two numbers disagree in spirit, believe the measurement. A product advertising an impressive ratio while declining to publish a beta-glucan figure has chosen to lead with the number nobody can check. That choice is information.

This is also why ratios and beta-glucan percentages are not interchangeable and cannot be traded off against each other. They answer different questions. The ratio tells you about the manufacturing process. The assay tells you about the product.

How to use the ratio anyway

The ratio is not useless. It is just secondary, and it becomes useful once the more important questions are already answered.

  • Establish the starting material first. Fruiting body or mycelium, and if mycelium, whether it is still on its grain substrate. Until you know this, the ratio has no meaning.
  • Look for a beta-glucan percentage measured by an enzymatic assay. That is your potency anchor.
  • Check the extraction method against the mushroom. For Reishi, dual extraction matters if triterpenes are part of what you are paying for.
  • Then, and only then, use the ratio to compare two products that are otherwise similar. Between two fruiting body extracts with comparable beta-glucan figures and the same extraction method, a higher ratio is a reasonable point in favour.

The one pattern worth watching for

Be most sceptical when a very high ratio appears alongside a very low price and no compositional testing. Concentrating real mushroom is expensive, and the cost scales with the ratio, because you need proportionally more raw material for every kilogram you sell. A 20:1 that costs less per gram than typical 8:1 products is telling you something about its inputs, and it is usually not the thing the label wants you to conclude.

Ratios are worth reading. They are just not worth ranking products by. The number that separates a strong extract from a weak one is on the certificate of analysis, not on the front of the box.
